Preschool Movement & Music

Every Tuesday morning at 9.30am, from the beginning of February to mid-December, children and their parents and caregivers come to the Aldred Complex hall to sing, play, dance and make music together. Classes are based on the Canterbury Musical Parenting Association ideas of musical play and using the elements to help pre-schoolers develop cognitive, language, gross-motor and fine-motor skills using action songs, nursery rhymes, finger plays, pitch and rhythm games and having fun together.

After 30 to 40 minutes of music led by Jody Keehan, volunteers from the St Alban’s Uniting Church parish serve up morning tea to the families while the children have playtime.

Cost per child is $2. Bookings not required, just come along and join in!

Jody Keehan Biography

Jody Keehan is a musician, mum and concert organiser who feels very lucky to be able to be able to combine her love of music into everything she does.

When she became a mum in 2002 Jody started teaching Pre-school Music and Movement and is currently an active member of the Canterbury Musical Parenting Association founded by Julie Wylie. Jody completed her Diploma in Early Childhood Music through the Institute of Registered Music Teachers in 2008. She volunteers at the Champion Centre as a music specialist for the monthly Preemie playgroup.

Jody plays saxophone, clarinet and sings all styles of music. She has helped organise many events like the Christchurch Big Band Festival, Children’s Day at the Groynes and the Timaru Christmas Parade. In her spare time, when she’s not teaching music and movement, she works for Chamber Music New Zealand as Concerts Manager for Christchurch and Christchurch District co-ordinator of the NZCT Chamber Music Contest for secondary school students as well as being a Trustee of the Canterbury Neo-natal Trust.
